HISTORY
Manuka honey comes from the nectar of the Manuka tree (Leptospermum scoparium), a flowering shrub native to New Zealand. Maori communities have used the Manuka plant, its leaves, bark, and honey, for wellness for centuries.
In 1839, missionary Mary Bumby introduced the first honeybee hives to New Zealand, allowing bees to begin foraging on wild Manuka blossoms. Since then, Manuka honey has become one of the most studied honeys in the world, prized for its naturally occurring MGO (methylglyoxal) compound, a marker of the distinctive strength that sets it apart from ordinary honey.
